MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Six members of the West Virginia University track and field team qualified to compete at the 2017 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field East Preliminary Regionals on May 25-27 in Lexington, Kentucky.

As ranked in the top-48 of the East Region in their respective events, seniors Amy Cashin, Megan Yuan, juniors Shamoya McNeil and Maggie Drazba, redshirt sophomore Madelin Gardner and sophomore Danique Bryan qualified to compete at the NCAA East Regionals.

This will be the third-straight year to the East Preliminary Round for Cashin and McNeil

“We are quite pleased with the group that we have qualified for the NCAA Championships,” coach Sean Cleary said. “The six that we are bringing have had tremendous outdoor seasons. These six recorded three school records in addition to three more all-time top-five performances. This is such an honor to qualify for the NCAA Regional meet. Our belief is that we simply need to go down to Lexington and perform as we have done so for the last month.”

Bryan will represent the Mountaineers in two events, in the women’s long jump and triple jump. The Clarendon, Jamaica, native qualified in the triple jump after setting a WVU record of 13.68 meters (44’-10 ¾”) at the Big 12 Outdoor Championship. Bryan bested Christine Brown’s 13.20-meter mark (43’-3 ¾”) set in 2001. In the long jump, Bryan jumped 6.28 meters (20’-7 ¼”), the fourth-best in program history, at the Bison Outdoor Classic to qualify.

McNeil also qualified to compete in the triple jump as she leapt a career-best and second-best all-time of 13.21 meters (43’-04 ¼”) at the Big 12 Outdoor Championship, also beating Christine Brown’s record.

Gardner qualified after her record-breaking performance in the pole vault at the Virginia Challenge. Gardner, WVU’s new record holder, vaulted 4.13 meters (13’-6 ½”), besting former Mountaineer Katlyn Shelar’s 4.10 meters (13’-5 ¼”), which was set in 2013.

In the women’s 3,000-meter steeplechase, Cashin and Yuan qualified after posting season-best times at the Big 12 Championship. Cashin earned a silver medal with a time of 10:18.08, and Yuan qualified with a time of 10:24.38.

Drazba will compete in the 10,000 meters for WVU, as she qualified with a time of 34.04.26 at the Big 12 Championship.

Last year, eight Mountaineers qualified to compete at the East Prelims.

For each individual event contested at each of the preliminary sites, the top-48 declared student-athletes were accepted into the competition. For each relay event, the top-24 declared relay teams were accepted into the competition. Combined events (Heptathlon and Decathlon) are not contested at the preliminary sites.

The qualifiers out of the East and West regions, who place in the top-eight in their events, will advance to the NCAA Championships on June 7-10 in Eugene, Oregon.
